土にうまれ、土にかえる。
太陽と風にさらされ、ひび割れた地表に雨が降りそそぎ、やがて大地から命が芽吹く。
この大きな循環の輪の中で、私たちは稲や麦を育て、生命を繋ぎ続け、新たな作品を生みだす。
チェンマイと中之条の芸術文化交流が始まって、今回の「from the ground - Chain mai × Nakanojo international art exhibition 2024」の開催で、約10年節目を迎えることになります。自然の大きなサイクルの中で、幾度となく繰り返されてきた自然災害やパンデミックですが、私たちの生きる時間の中では、とても大きな困難となりました。今こうして、日本のアーティストともにチェンマイの土を踏むことが出来るのは、互いの文化を理解し敬意を払い交流を続けてきたことに他ならないと思います。
展覧会のテーマ「土にうまれる」は、主に自然素材を扱うアーティストが、チェンマイの豊かな農村地域に滞在して、自然の中に身を委ねて作品制作を行います。朝靄に包まれる森、雨粒に打たれる稲穂、私たちもその一部であることを感じ、身体と作品も、決して土から切り離すことが出来ないことに気づきを得て、新たな作品が生み出されます。
私たちが続けてきた文化芸術の相互交流が、大地に芽吹く命のように循環し続けることを願いつつ、本展覧会が開催できることに感謝いたします。

Born in the ground, and going back to the ground.
After the rain is carried, it sprouts out from the cracked grounds that are exposed by the sun and winds.
Within these circles, we keep passing batons of life by growing rice and barley, and then create new works.
This time, the exhibition “from the ground - Chaingmai × Nakanojo international art exhibition 2024” is almost 10th years anniversary since we started the arts and cultural exchange between Chiang Mai and Nakanojo. Intaractive exchanges of arts and cultures have circled like lives that sprout out on the ground with getting through many difficulties such as disasters and pandemics. The theme of the exhibition this time “from the ground” is the exhibition by the artists who mainly use natural materials. They create artworks while they try to understand each other their own culture and the climate features of each country during their stay in Chiang Mai.

チェンマイでの滞在制作は高熱で寝込むことから始まった。今回の作品は回復、あるいは組み直されていく身体の記録である。与えられた部屋の目の前にはたくさんのハーブが育つ庭が広がっていた。5日間の高熱を経て回復に向かう中、弱っている身体で庭を歩き、本能的に惹かれた庭の植物を採取し続けた。それは視覚、触覚、嗅覚などの感覚を通じて、チェンマイの自然が分解された身体に組み込まれていく体験であった。
My stay as an artist in residence in Chiang Mai started from laying down on the bed because of the high fever. The artwork this time is the records of my body that has got recovered or rebuilt. There was a garden with many kinds of herbs expanding in front of the room I was given for sleeping. While getting recovered from the high fever 5 days in a row, I walked around the garden with my weakened body, then picked up plants I was attracted to instinctively. It was the experiment that nature in Chiang Mai had incorporated into my body through the sense of sight, and others.
