中之条町の桑

住まわれた世界とはそうした踏み跡の入り組んだ網細工であり、生がそれらの踏み跡に沿って進んでいくに連れて絶え間なく織られ続けるものである。  −ティム・インゴルド『ラインズ──線の文化史』

中之条町ではかつて養蚕業が盛んに行われ、その名残は町のあちこちに残る桑の木から感じ取ることができる。桑畑は少なくなったものの、桑の木は今も土地の記憶として立ち続けている。

本作では、六合赤岩地区に残る桑の木を採集することから制作を始めた。採集した桑の木の皮を剥ぎ、組み並べ、石で叩きながらつなぎ合わせ、面へと広げていった。

人が住まう世界は、時間や環境、行為の積み重ねを織り込みながら築かれ続けている。私は、この土地に根付く桑の木を通して、人々の営みの痕跡をたどろうとした。

In the past, the sericulture industry flourished in Nakanojo. Although mulberry fields have largely disappeared, mulberry trees still remain throughout the town, retaining traces of this history.

For this work, I began by collecting mulberry trees growing in the Akaiwa area of Kuni. I stripped the bark, arranged the fibers, and beat them with stones, connecting and expanding them into sheet-like forms.

The world we live in is continuously formed through the accumulation of time, environment, and human activities. Through the mulberry trees rooted in this land, I attempted to trace the layered histories of daily life and labor.
