2024年、セネガル・ダカールでのアーティスト・イン・レジデンスに参加し、テキスタイルアーティスト兼デザイナーであるアイッサ・ディオーヌの邸宅に滞在した。庭に落ちた植物や現地で作られた紙を素材として取り入れ、土地の環境や人々の営みと結びついた時間の層を紙の中に留めることを試みた。

帰国後、セネガルのアーティスト、セリーニュ・ンバイェ・カマラとの2 人展「Intimité」（Space Un Tokyo）にて、《Recipe for Aïssa’ s garden》《Her hands, her life》を発表した。素材や行為を共有することで生まれる関係性や、異なる土地を往復するなかで変化していく認識をテーマとした。

日本とセネガルを結ぶ大陸横断の対話 space Unでは、セネガル人アーティストセリーニュ・ンバイェ・カマラと日本人アーティスト半澤友美による初の共同展覧会「アンティミテ」を開催いたします。本展は、日本とアフリカを文化的に結び、アートを通して新しい対話を生み出すspace Unの使命を象徴するプロジェクトです。キュレーター：ウセイヌ・ワッドによるこの展示では、二人のアーティストが繊細かつ力強い創造的な対話を繰り広げます。

紙や繊維を素材に制作をする半澤友美は、2024年10月にセネガル・ダカールに滞在し、現地の文化や新たな視点を肌で感じ取りました。同時に、セリーニュ・ムバイェ・カマラはspace Unの吉野レジデンシープログラムで2週間参加しました。異なる大陸で生まれ育った二人のアーティストが、文化を超えた対話を通じて、アートの持つ無限の可能性と結びつきの力を提示します。この展覧会は、space Unにとって、日本とセネガルのアーティストを同時に紹介する初の試みであり、アフリカとアジア間に新たな文化の架け橋を築く貴重な一歩です。

Space Un Tokyo

​半澤友美は、アイッサ・ディオーヌ※邸での滞在中におけるその庭との問答、そしてその解釈を通じて、自身の「秘密の庭」 の一端を表現することを選びました。彼女にとって、目に映る自然が真のインスピレーションの源となり、またサン=ルイ地域で出会った女性たちによって手作りされた紙と、ディオーヌ邸の庭に茂る植物の葉や花との間にすぐに結びつきを見出しました。半澤の作品は、自然への賛歌であり、親密さをより高次元へと昇華するような創造性の表現です。そこには、ディオーヌのアトリエで織られたオーガニックコットン、自然紙、そして日々集めて選ばれた葉や花が巧みに融合されています。彼女の作品の細やかな構成は、際立った適応力と自己超越に支えられた豊かな感受性の披瀝です。彼女は、日出ずる国である日本と、おもてなし(テランガ)の国であるセネガルとの間に存 在する、予期せぬつながりを見事に表現しています。また、つながりという観点から見ると、半澤のダカールでの滞在は、アーティストのセリーニュ・ンバイェ・カ マラとの素晴らしい出会いをもたらし、実り多い芸術的な対話を生み出すこととなりました。

※アイッサ・ディオーヌは、セネガル在住の著名なアーティスト兼デザイナーであり、西アフリカの伝統的な織物技術の復興に貢献しました。彼女はインテリア向けの手織り生地を制作する企業「Aissa Dione Tissus」を設立し、アフリカの職人技を世界に広める重要な役割を果たしています。ディオーヌの活動は、アフリカの工芸をグローバルなデザインマーケットに引き上げる象徴的な存在です。また、Galerie Atiss Dakarの創設者でもあります。

In 2024, I participated in an artist residency in Dakar, Senegal, staying at the home of the textile artist and designer Aïssa Dione. I incorporated plants that had fallen onto the soil in her garden, as well as locally handmade paper, into my work, exploring how layers of time ar e shaped b y the environment and everyday life in that place.

After returning to Japan, I presented Recipe for Aïssa’ s garden and Her hands, her life in the two-person exhibition “Intimité” with Senegalese artist Serigne Mbaye Camara at Space Un Tokyo. Through shared materials and making processes, I have been reflecting on the relationships that emerge, and on how my ways of seeing shift as I move between different lands.

A unique cultural dialogue showcasing the works of two exceptional artists, Serigne Mbaye Camara from Senegal and Tomomi Hanzawa from Japan. This exhibition, titled Intimité: A Cross-Continental Dialogue Between Japan and Senegal, embodies Space Un’s mission to bridge Japan and Africa through the power of art. The exhibition is curated by Ousseynou Wade from Senegal.

Tomomi Hanzawa, an artist who works with paper and fiber materials, spent October 2024 in Dakar, Senegal, where she deeply experienced the local culture and gained new perspectives. At the same time, Serigne Mbaye Camara participated in space Un’s residency program in Yoshino for two weeks. This exhibition marks a milestone for space Un as it is the gallery’s first attempt to present both Japanese and Senegalese artists together.

Space Un Tokyo

​In her residency at Aïssa Dione*'s home, Tomomi HANZAWA has immersed herself in nature as a source of inspiration. She has intertwined elements from the handmade paper created by women in the Saint-Louis region with plants and flowers from Aïssa's courtyard, crafting an homage to nature through a fusion of organic cotton, natural paper, and carefully selected foliage. Her meticulous compositions reflect a profound sensitivity and an impressive adaptability, subtly linking the Land of the Rising Sun with the Land of Teranga. Her immersion in Dakar also facilitated an enriching artistic dialogue with fellow artist Serigne Mbaye CAMARA.

*Aïssa Dione is a prominent Senegalese artist and designer, renowned for her work in reviving traditional West African weaving techniques. She founded Aïssa Dione Tissus, a textile company that creates high-quality, handwoven fabrics used in luxury interiors worldwide. Through her work, Dione has become a key figure in promoting African craftsmanship on the global stage. She is also the founder of Galerie Atiss Dakar.
